چکیده

PEARLS Limbic encephalitis is an inflammatory condition of the brain, often characterized by the subacute onset of short-term memory loss, disorientation, seizures, behavioral disturbance, and psychiatric symptoms. Besides paraneoplastic syndromes with onconeural antibodies targeted against intracellular neuronal antigens, limbic encephalitis may also arise from nonparaneoplastic mechanisms with antibodies targeting neuronal cell surface antigens. Antithyroid antibodies can be in coexistence with antibodies to neuronal surface antigens such as leucine-rich glioma inactivated protein 1 (LGI1). IV immunoglobulin (IVIg), plasma exchange, and corticosteroids are all recommended as potential treatment for patients with autoimmune limbic encephalitis with positive anti-LGI1 and antithyroid antibodies.

Nicolai, MD, PhD CLINICAL PEARLS The clinical picture of antiNMDA receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis is highly characteristic; the presence of NMDAR antibodies confirms the diagnosis. With its poor diagnostic criteria, encephalitis lethargica (EL) is a descriptive term for a melting pot of symptoms that lik...

Limbic encephalitis associated with anti-NH2-terminal of α-enolase antibodies

Several types of autoantibodies have been reported in autoimmune limbic encephalitis (LE), such as antibodies against the voltage-gated potassium channel (VGKC) complex including leucine-rich glioma inactivated 1 (LGI1). We recently reported a patient with autoimmune LE and serum anti-NH2-terminal of α-enolase (NAE) antibodies, a specific diagnostic marker for Hashimoto encephalopathy (HE), who...

An adolescent case of limbic encephalitis with anti leucine-rich glioma inactivated 1 antibodies

Background: Limbic encephalitis associated with leucine-rich glioma inactivated 1 (LGI1) antibodies can initially have either neurological or psychiatric manifestation. Subject and methods: The paper describes a case of a 14-year old girl with LGI1 antibodiesassociated limbic encephalitis with initial symptoms suggesting psychotic disturbances. Results: The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of t...

Investigation of LGI1 as the antigen in limbic encephalitis previously attributed to potassium channels: a case series.

BACKGROUND Voltage-gated potassium channels are thought to be the target of antibodies associated with limbic encephalitis. However, antibody testing using cells expressing voltage-gated potassium channels is negative; hence, we aimed to identify the real autoantigen associated with limbic encephalitis. METHODS We analysed sera and CSF of 57 patients with limbic encephalitis and antibodies at...

A rare case of limbic encephalitis with anti leucine-rich glioma inactivated-1 (LGI1) antibodies.

We report a case of limbic encephalitis with LGI1 antibodies and cranial MRI abnormality. A 41-year-old woman who presented with confusional state that had started 1 month ago. Brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed hyperintense signal in right basal ganglia followed by hyperintense signals in left hippocampus and bilateral basal ganglia half a month later. This case expands the spectrum of ...
